PAWNYCast

About

PAWNYCast is a once-monthly podcast aimed at discussing the various and unique opportunities that exist within the realm of pharmacy and providing updates on the latest happenings - all while having a little bit of fun along the way.

PAWNYCast is the official podcast of the the Pharmacists’ Association of Western New York is a local affiliate of the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York (PSSNY). Our mission is to advocate, support, and provide resources for members of the Pharmacy profession in all practice settings as essential healthcare team members to optimize patient outcomes.

Each episode drops on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, stay tuned!

Episode 1 - Healthcare Technology

On the first episode of PAWNYCast we begin exploring the various career opportunities pharmacists can have and their path to these careers.

Our first guest Mary Lou Notaro - a strategic program manager at Dr. First - discusses her unique role as a pharmacist as well as the importance of continued involvement in local pharmacy organizations. 

Episode 2 - Patient Advocacy and Herbalism

What is a patient advocate? How can one get involved with patient advocacy?  Why is mint oreo ice cream no longer in production?  What can we, as pharmacists, do to ensure patients get their medical needs met? How can we ensure that Eastern and Western Medicine coexist? To help answer these questions, Vicky talks to Dr. Stacie Lampkin -  a board-certified pediatric pharmacist, certified aromatherapist and board-certified patient advocate. 

Episode 3 - Medication Therapy Management

 

Dr. Stephanie Engler talks about her role as director of clinical development at CSS Health,  where she is responsible for the development and maintenance of clinical content and rules within CSS Health's medication therapy management platform, MTMPath.

Episode 4 - Trade Relations

The guest for this month is Dr. Kevin Lavery, manager of trade relations at pharmacy benefit dimensions. We discuss his role in overseeing the rebates and drug manufacturer contracts program and leading negotiations with pharmaceutical manufacturers for new agreements and renewals on formulary products. We also talk about his involvement in SPSSNY and SPAWNY and why he continues to stay involved, even after graduation.

Objectives

1) Review the historical management of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF)

 2) Describe the study design, methods and patient population studied in the EMPEROR-Preserved trial 

3) Summarize the significant findings of the EMPEROR-Preserved trial 

4) Apply the results of the EMPEROR-Preserved trial to a HFpEF patient case


Episode 6 - Medical Cannabis Dispensary

On this month’s episode, Dr. Brianna Riester shares her experience working at the botanist, a local medical dispensary. Dr. Riester highlights the unique aspects of her job and helps clear up some common misconceptions about this type of work.
